Series Description

The Power Innovations Q-Series™ Traffic Controller Uninterruptible Power Quality™ (UPQ™) system has been designed to condition input power and provide battery backup for traffic control systems. The Q-TC is designed for application inside a traditional semifore-type traffic controller box and suitable for operation in extreme environments, including temperature, humidity, and/or contamination. As additional protection from rust and fungus, components are treated with an anti-corrosive conformal coating prior to unit assembly.

The Q-TC is an advanced, true on-line, uninterruptible power system with outputs ranging from 1000VA to 3000VA, and suitable to accomodate virtually any traffic controller power needs. Using UPQ technology, which incorporates five (5) stages of isolation, filtration, and conversion, the Q-TC consistently produces a reliable, pure sine wave power output.

The Q-TC records and stores a cumulative count (HH:MM) of AC input power downtime. In the event of AC input failure, connected traffic signals are powered by available battery backup, thus remaining operational so long as battery power is available.

Using the Bypass Box provided with the Q-TC system, the User may manually change the source of input power. Using the Bypass Box, the User may:

  • bypass the load (traffic signal) to utility power, or
  • use an external portable/mobile source to the load (directly or via the Q-TC)

When the Bypass Box is used to divert power away from the Q-TC system, the User may remove the Q-TC module without disruption of power to the load (traffic signal) regardless of the input power source (AC utility, portable, mobile, or other).

All Q-TC models offer advanced power security through the provision of redundant features and the incorporation of an internal SNMP-Web management option (UPQnet-agent III). The UPQnet-agent III provides real-time power statistics and remote/local control of any connected system. Access to system date is available from within a network or via an Internet connection, direct dial-up, or other portable handheld device, such as a PDA and/or cell phone.

Ideally suited for:

  • Traffic Controllers

Series Features

Complete Isolation and Protection from Input Power Problems

Q-TC Series systems are always online, and provide five (5) stages of isolation and conversion. In comparison, traditional UPS online systems provide only two (2) stages of isolation allow Q-TC Series systems to accept a wider range of input power variation (up to double that of traditional UPS systems).

High Resolution Sine Wave Output

The Q-TC assures perfect power to connected equipment. The systems isolate, filter, and regulate impure and erratic input power to provide a pure and consistent sine wave output.

High Frequency Power Generation

High frequency generation refers to the rate and resolution by which the inverter can switch to produce a sine wave. Q-TC systems generate at 50 KHz- more than twice as fast as most traditional UPS systems. high frequency switching provides a perfect sine wave output while offering higher efficiency. Some advantages include smaller size for equal output, less weight, less heat dissipation, longer run time, and higher reliability.

Air Filtering

Q-TC systems incorporate negative air flow and a filtering process that together help keep vital components clean. This feature enables cooler and more reliable operation.

Expandable Backup Time

All battery modules are external to the standard systems. Q-TC system batteries provide five (5) minutes of backup time at full load. Backup time is expandable with additional battery modules. Cabinets are available to house and protect any configuration of battery backup modules, and may be directly connected to the system via custom Anderson Quick Disconnect Connectors (QDC) or hardwire terminal strips.

Advanced Protection

The Q-TC Series incorporates technologies that preserve the life of the system and connected equipment. Advanced features include:

·         Overload bypass

·         Short-circuit protection

·         Over temperature shutdown

Q-TC Series Features

  • Always online
  • Five (5) stages of isolation and conversion
  • Bypass load protection
  • Full feature display
  • High efficiency
  • Extended / scalable battery backup times
  • Hot-swappable batteries
  • Horizontal or vertical mounting options
  • Countdown counter
  • Auxiliary output receptacle
  • Contact closure status
  • Bypass Box (optional)
  • SNMP web management (optional)

Environmental Extremes

The Q-TC Series has been built to withstand the harshest climates and changes in the environment. Internal cooling fans are contained within the Q-TC system, allowing safe operation in conditions from -40º to 74º C. Batteries, however, can only withstand temperatures ranging from -20º to 40º C. Heat pads can be added to extend the range of low temperature tolerance for the batteries. Temperature sensors are available through the UPQnet-agent III for additional internal and external sensor points.

Bypass Box (optional)

Using the Bypass Box provided with the Q-TC module, the User may manually change the source of input power. Using the Bypass Box, the User may:

    1. bypass the load (traffic signal) to utility power, or

    2. use an external portable / mobile source to power the load (directly or via the Q-TC)

When the Bypass Box is used to divert power away from the Q-TC system, the User may remove the Q-TC module without disruption of power to the load (traffic signal) regardless of the input power source (AC utility, portable, mobile, or other).

Multiple Outputs for Traffic Controller Functions

The Q-TC Series has two AC outputs, plus an additional utility tap. One output is routed via a Bypass Box and the other is located on the back of the Q-TC system. The utility TPT (temporary power tap) is provided via a NEMA 5-15 for additional equipment connection. A terminal block is also available for direct wired connection.

Status Communications

The Q-TC system comes with a contact closure terminal block and an RS-232 communication port. The following contact closures are provided via the RS-232 DB-9 port: AC power failure, dual low battery, dual timer, and self-test.

Tri-Function Display

The Q-TC system has a tri-function LED display. The LED display shows the operating status of the system, load percentage, and the level of the battery.

Counter & Timer

The Q-TC records and stores a cumulative count (HH:MM) of AC input failure, connected traffic signals are powered by available battery backup, thus remaining operational so long as battery power is available.

UPQsoft™

UPQsoft is Power Innovations' smart UPQ local monitoring and control software for the Windows, NetWare, or UNIX/Linux environment. This software provides a real-time view of the Q-TC system status within a standalone or networked environment. Displayed in a variety of graphical and table forms, the data gives administrators access to UPQ system activity and a comprehensive history of power-related events (see UPQsoft).

Options to be purchased with this series:

UPQnet-agent III™

The Q-TC can be remotely monitored and managed using a UPQnet-agent III. The UPQ net-agent III provides a comprehensive, easy-to-understand, secure Web-base interface to monitor and control any UPQ system- via a network, an IP address or dial-up connection. This web page provides vital information from the Q-TC that is available both locally and remotely, and may be accessed via computer, cell phone, PDA or other electronic devices with internet connections. The UPQnet-agent III also sends TRAP and email notifications regarding system status when user-set parameters are achieved (see UPQnet-agent III).
