A new break-through in mobile generation provides the Coast Guard with clean, reliable power.

LINDON, Utah, July 16, 2007— The Canadian Coast Guard is constantly trying to improve boat living conditions for its crew. In a marine environment it is always a challenge to provide reliable, clean power to the Guard’s Search and Rescue (SAR) lifeboats.

In pursuit of an upgrade, the Canadian Coast Guard through Public Works Government Services Canada and Victoria Shipyards Co, Ltd, B.C. contracted with Power Innovations Int'l to build a new power system for 24 of its boats. In June, the first pair of 70 Auto-Regulated Motion Power System’s™ (AMPS™) were successfully installed into one SAR lifeboat in Newfoundland.

The AMPS provides the Coast Guard with reliable, clean power. It does not interfere with communication equipment. These benefits were exactly what the Canadian Coast Guard was looking for to meet their high standards.

“When I helped design the SAR lifeboat, the AMPS technology was not available. When I heard about the technology, I knew this was the exact improvement needed for the lifeboats. I am excited to see that the Canadian Coast Guard is being so forward thinking in making these power improvements,” said George Kohorst, the senior electrician responsible for the building, testing, and delivery of the SAR lifeboats.

The AMPS voltage and frequency regulator provides reliable, clean power to supply the Canadian lifeboats with the capability to run all equipment requiring AC power. Supplying climate control; such as heating and air conditioning, cooking capabilities, and the ability to make a hot cup of coffee while out to sea.

The AMPS technology, unique to Power Innovations, converts energy created by a custom designed alternator, into clean, reliable power. Other systems on the market require a constant high RPM to provide a steady power output. The AMPS works with the alternator speed ranging from 1,750 - 10,000 RPM and the input frequencies from 175 - 1k Hz.

With the AMPS, vehicles and boats can generate necessary power either at idle or full throttle. For the Coast Guard, any time the SAR lifeboat engine is running, AMPS provides 5 kVA of perfect, continuous AC power.

The AMPS has the potential to provide other power outputs (5-10 kVA). The system can be used in RVs, ships, houseboats, fire trucks, first response vehicles, military vehicles, emergency systems, and ambulances. An additional battery to run the microwave, use a laptop, or run important instruments will no longer be necessary. The additional power needed is generated directly from the custom alternator.
